The technology giant, Google – is planning to expand its products and services in Africa.
To help prove this, it announced the 10 most widely spoken African languages last May, 2022; when it added more than 25 languages to Google Translate, while 2 of the added languages are Ethiopian(Oromo and Tigrinya) and the 3rd language is Afar which is currently on its final stage(Beta Level). For the success of this mega project, we are creating national wide community in Ethiopia as Google Crowdsource – Ethiopia the can organize the Four Ethiopian Languages(Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Afar) on Crowdsource. This is a great task for our country and the African continent not only to develop languages, culture, history and traditions but also to make their own contents properly organized and accessible on the Internet.
So, as 3A supports research in the integrated study of languages, cultures, and societies as its first mission, 3A is to support/coordinate Google Crowdsource – Ethiopia team for Ethiopian & African languages.
Since 2015, many young people from home and abroad have been organizing themselves and working freely on various technological activities that support and promote the development of language and culture of our community. Therefore, in 2016, We requested the Great Social Network Company (Facebook) to provide services in Oromo, including the production of a website in Oromo, and in the same year, Google to open the door to the language and culture of our people. A group of young people who were working in this way and Scholars from various Universities came together and established the African Language Association.
Language is the cornerstone of your identity, the connection to your past and the key to your future. When we can’t experience the internet in our language, it limits what we can learn, what our culture look likes, what jobs we can have, what stories we can access, and so much more.
Now a day 1/3rd of the world’s languages are spoken in Africa, but less than 1% of African languages are represented online. Even those presented online are insufficient and low-resource languages almost all across Africa.
This is significant because the language you speak, write or sign shapes your online experience, your existence limitation, & limits your every activities on Internet. Therefore, that, those limitations need urgent solutions by natives [young talents, scholars & experts] collaborations.
Accordingly, Afan Africa Association (3A) is founded to overcome those limitations, challenges and provide solutions for the way to speak write or sign shapes on internet specifically for Ethiopian languages and African languages in general.
Afan Africa Association (3A) is a charity association that was established on 20/07/2022.
Afan Africa Association (3A) is a collection of high-profiled scholars, creative youth from different higher educations, experienced Linguists & Tech experts in different languages in Ethiopia and Africa in general.
