Prof. Teshome Soromessa has received his BSc and MSc from Addis Ababa University and PhD from the University of Vienna. He has taught several courses and supervised/co-supervised over 100 graduate students (PhD and MSc students). He has served as examiner/pre-reviewer of many graduate theses. Prof. Teshome has published over 200 scientific articles, journals, books, book chapters, entries and different bulletins. His research and publications focus on the flora of NE and E Tropical Africa. He has specifically pioneered and spear-headed in research related to carbon stock, modelling of ecosystem services and tree allometry in Ethiopian vegetation. Professor Teshome was a member of the editorial board of many journals and served as an associate editor as well. Professor Teshome promoted capacity building of AAU by rendering services such as head of department; leading various national mega projects such as National DelPHE Project and National EPA Project representing Addis Ababa University; CIRCLE project in collaboration with over 150 sub-Saharan African Universities; many environment related projects in the Horn of Africa; Addis Ababa Rivers and River Sides Development Plan Project and RCMRD/ SERVIR-Africa Project from where he received a medal of recognition. He owns business companies which he himself manages.
He has been and is a member of several local and international associations and committees such as AETFAT (Association pour l’Etude Taxonomique de la Flore d’Afrique Tropicale), the Biological Society of Ethiopia, Environmental Society of Ethiopia, Society of Australian Systematic Biologists and a member in Mountain forum. He has been actively engaged in helping and collaborating with national and international NGO’s where he works as board chairman and board member for many. He has been working with international, national and multidisciplinary teams at different levels both in the form of consultation and advisory, among others, member for an International Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and International Committee for Standards in Environmental Management Systems. He is the first professor in Ethiopia who was conferred as Professor of Environmental Science.
